Issues with the swoop

I stopped by this afternoon to check on things and was surprised to see Kyle (our architect) show up. I had been looking at the framing for the swoop detail of the roof last night and was curious as to how the framers were going to put it all together. Apparently so were they. Somehow the roof lines weren't matching up to the plans. That's Kyle looking at the plans and Izzy the lead framer looking down. The other picture is Izzy on the roof measuring the height. Everything seems to be the right height so no one really knows what the swoop isn't lining up with the roof over the office. In the end Kyle they decided that actually raising the ceiling of the office by a foot was the solution. That is actually a plus because the office will gain 10' ceilings and the copper roof over the bay window will look better.

Here's some more photos of the house at this stage. They're just finishing framing and the plumber has started work inside.

Update on framing, roof, kitchen

It’s been over a week since I’ve blogged and the framers are…still working on the roof. It’s a very complicated roof, but they’re almost done. All the trusses are up. Now they are stick framing the “witches hat” over the master bedroom sitting area and the “swoop” over the entry.  This both required some custom steel fabrication.

Windows were all delivered last week as well.

Speaking of steel, Doug let me know that Lonnie (the framing company) said that the steel prices had increased so the prices in our estimate for steel may be too low and actual costs may be double.  Since steel is a commodity I checked out the monthly price of steel and it hasn’t increased at all in the last few months and it actually dropped 20% as of the first Wednesday in September.  I’ll look forward to seeing the actual bill to see what is going on.  Maybe it was just a misunderstanding.

I’ve been meeting with several cabinet companies.  Great Indoors had a special 20% off sale, and they were still 20% higher than competing bids.  Classic Cabinet Design in Louisville has a great designer named David—he used to work as an installer and is very knowledgeable.  He is bidding on the Dura Supreme Designer line.  He price seems much better than Caruso Kitchens.  I last spoke to Pam at Caruso Kitchens two weeks ago and she said she was going to work on getting the price down, but I haven’t heard back.  Jeff at Main Street kitchens is bidding with the Canyon Creek line of cabinets and he seems like he will be competitive.  Steve of Heller Interiors is the owner of a small custom shop in Colorado Springs (been in business since 1957).  His bid was the lowest of all and includes all installation.  The cabinets would be built by three craftsmen that have been with the company for between 15-30 years.

We did redesign the upstairs bedroom/bathroom and that should give us another foot of wall space in the upstairs bedroom.  The framers haven’t reconfigured it yet. In fact I left Doug a message tonight to be sure the plumber is aware—he already cut a whole for the toilet in the wrong spot!

The power on the webcam is out. Sorry! The temporary electric box’s 110V outlet seemed to have died.  I thought the electrician was going to fix it today, but no luck yet.

Received the monthly draw request.  Surprisingly it included a sizable bill for plumbing, but nothing has been done.  Doug says this is a “pre-bill” since the work will be done in the next couple of weeks and they hate to wait another month.  So we’ll have to hold onto that check until the work is done.
