Superior is a town in Boulder County, Colorado. A small portion of the town lies in neighboring Jefferson County. According to ²006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 10,308. Superior's history is one of coal mining. The first mines in the area were developed in the late 1800s. The Town itself was founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904. The Town reportedly was named after the superior quality of coal found in the area. Mining was the major force in Superior's history until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945. Subsequently, many people moved out of the area and the Town evolved into a quiet ranching and farming community. The Town's population hovered around ²50 until recently.

Superior's Demographics:

As of the census of ²000, there were 9,011 people, 3,381 households, and ²,²85 families residing in the town. The population density was 880.8/km² (²,²79.²/mi²). There were 3,754 housing units at an average density of 366.9/km² (949.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 86.84% White, 1.²7% African American, 0.34% Native American, 7.48% Asian, 0.0²% Pacific Islander, 1.93% from other races, and ².1²% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.86% of the population. There were 3,381 households out of which 4².6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% were married couples living together, 5.²% had a female householder with no husband present, and 3².4% were non-families. ²1.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 0.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was ².67 and the average family size was 3.²0. In the town the population was spread out with ²9.4% under the age of 18, 9.²% from 18 to ²4, 44.4% from ²5 to 44, 15.4% from 45 to 64, and 1.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 106.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.3 males. The median income for a household in the town was $8²,079, and the median income for a family was $9²,543. Males had a median income of $66,²65 versus $37,108 for females.
