As of the census of ²000, there were 41,7²7 people, 14,39² households, and 7,469 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,870.²/km² (4,84².0/mi²). There were 14,916 housing units at an average density of 879.3/km² (²,²76.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.77% White, 1.46% African American, 1.31% Native American, 1.86% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 4.99% from other races, and ².5²% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.05% of the population. There were 14,39² households out of which ²3.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.7% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.1% were non-families. 37.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was ².15 and the average family size was ².88.
